Djinn on the Rocks
by Dante Elgin
Contemporary Fantasy
Countless emigrants hitting the shores of New York have long since made it a practice to Americanize their names and buy into their new culture. That’s just what half-breed djinn, Rabriel, does when he suddenly finds himself in Manhattan. He changes his name to John Denny and sets up shop, selling wishes to those who can afford them. Only when the gods come calling does he learn that he’s violated some very core rules of the universe. Now he’s faced with becoming indentured to one of them, and who it will be depends on how he performs on a test they’ve created just for him. (Pages 438)

Djinn on the Rocks is a hilarious fantasy of a djinn--don't call him a genie--who suddenly shows up on the middle of Manhattan after being released from his vindictive human master. The djinn, Rabriel, takes on a new name to fit in, John Denny, and supports himself by selling wishes. Since he's never been to the mortal world and what he knows about it is from American television, his interaction with people is full of euphemisms and cultural standards. Dante Elgin wasn't afraid to step on toes when he wrote this book, which no doubt will become a series. The story is a whirlwind of action as Rabriel is told he's lived his life in New York the wrong way and must be indentured to a god. He's given a job to do, and how he performs it will determine which god gets his indenture. Unfortunately, no one tells him with that job entails, and Rabriel bumbles his way through it, trying to figure out the best way of getting it done where he isn't given over to an evil god. In the meantime, he angers several other gods by encroaching on their territory without their permission, and each one demands recompense. That only adds more to his obligations. This story is chock full of situational comedy and witty banter that will have you laughing out loud...Tony Senley
Dante Elgin is a master at contemporary fantasy. He crafted an epic story encompassing stuffed with action, mystery, and hilarity. Readers won't be able to put this book down and will need a tissue to wipe their eyes from all the tears they'll shed laughing so hard. Elgin writes a humorous account of a bumbling but kind-hearted magical being who is only trying to stay free. But as he goes along, he comes across people--both gods and mortals--who only want him for what he can do for them. No one seems to consider him as someone who could be counted as a friend, even when all he wants is that...Pinky Westbrook
This is absolutely insane in a completely hilarious way. The funnest ride I've ever taken. I was in stitches through the whole book. A daunting 428 pages, but worth every bit. The story doesn't drag anywhere. Non-stop action, comedy, and magic. Puts a lot of well-known writers in the field to shame. Blasts Jim Butcher's White Knight out of the water with humor and storyline. Rabriel, aka John Denny, is the new king of cosmic comedy...Pete Beasley
IGNORANCE OF THE LAW IS NOT AN EXCUSE FOR BREAKING IT
We’ve all been told this at one time or another. But the laws we must abide by are pretty clear and essentially easy to comply with. Yet what would happen if we were capable of doing anything we wanted, and it was only certain rules that kept us from doing so. Would it be so easy then? Would we be able to resist? Would we be willing to challenge the repercussions if we violated them?
Dante Elgin writes a hilariously comical contemporary fantasy where he not only tests the bounds of the norm, but exceeds them. Employing magic in his tale isn’t the only extension of his imagination. It’s the cheeky stretch of offending anything held sacred by society, from the concept of God and Christianity, to the exploitation of the handicapped, that lends to the humor in this epic tale. Elgin does this masterfully so we’re caught laughing our socks off when we realize he’s just violated political correctness; and even then, we’re willing to forgive him for the integrity of the story
Djinn on the Rocks is a wild ride through the city of Manhattan, with magic powering the engine that drives it. Nothing is off limits when it comes to Elgin sending his character off on a test that will ultimately indenture him to a god, only which god that is will be determined on the merits of his performance. And since Rabriel, a.k.a. John Denny, is reckless, willful, and not too smart, that opens the prospects up to several different interesting gods. Readers will laugh nonstop through this comic epic of madcap adventures and coming-of-age discovery. For mystery lovers, there’s plenty involved as well, just not any of the stuffy Agatha Christie style.
